The Australian punk icons announce that their first album in over three decades is due out 11 June.
Australian proto-grunge/punks, The Scientists, were undoubtedly at the forefront of the Australian punk scene. The band have announced their new album Negativity will be out in early June. The album follows their 2019 EP 9H20.SiO2 released soon after their first-ever U.S. tour in 2018.
The band have shared their first single, Outsider, directed by Andrew Watson, via YouTube, ahead of the albums release.
The origninal line-up came together in 1978 formed by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Kim Salmon and drummer James Baker, (Victims, The Hitmen, Hoodoo Gurus). This current line-up is more consistent with the second or third coming of the Scientists, including Salmon, lead guitarist Tony Thewlis, bassist Boris Sujdovic and drummer Leanne Cowie, who joined in 1986.
The band were crucial for Australian independent music in the ’80s, with a cult following overflowing into the international market, taking the band across to London.
Their psych/swamp/garage/punk/rock style saw them touring Europe and picking up recording contracts during their time in the UK. Tracks such as Swampland and We Had Love still carry the band high on the punk pedestal today.
In a recent press release, Salmon noted he is no longer the principal songwriter, with all members contributing to the new material and the singer now also playing more drums.
“I’ve been sort of teaching myself drums over the years, and I’m probably still the world’s worst drummer”- Kim Salmon, The Scientists

Salmon said. “I’d jam away on the drums in a practice room, and if I got something good that I could sing to, I’d start recording myself and send it over to Tony and wait for him to send me a riff back. That’s how we wrote most of the album.”

Everyone should have a soundtrack playing loudly in the background of their life. I was born moshing to my own beat and have never swayed from my love of music. Spreading my passion through the written word is my soul’s purpose. My punk heart beats loudly with the rhythm of my rock soul. I plan to continue to mosh like no one gives a shit.
