At a time when Deafheaven are exploring the delights of clean vocals, their former tour mates Portrayal of Guilt are doubling down on gnarled black metal stylings for new single Possession.
The charred, howling punk record is the US post-hardcore band’s first release for their new label – Boston’s punk and hardcore specialists Run For Cover.
Possession will be followed by a full album, the uncompromisingly titled Christfucker. It features guest vocals from Jenna Rose of New York darkwave outfit Anatomy and Touché Amoré’s Jeremy Bolm and will be out on 5 November.
Commenting on his band’s unsettling new music, guitarist and vocalist Matt King said: “We think of it partially in the sense of scoring a horror movie. We wanted to create an atmosphere of anxiety and fear.”
King, along with drummer James Beveridge and bassist Alex Stanfield, has certainly succeeded. Their time spent with Ben Greenberg at Strange Weather and Circular Ruin studios in Brooklyn yielded a series of unrelenting, nihilistic, howling soundscapes.
The collection will add to a burgeoning discography of two albums, two EPs, four split singles and a digital one since the band formed in Austin, Texas in 2017. Meanwhile, Christfucker will be Portrayal of Guilt’s second full-length release this year, following January’s We Are Always Alone which came out on Closed Casket.
Next month, Portrayal of Guilt will be back on the road in the US for the first time since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, and the release of We Are Always Alone. Highlights of their planned road activity include a full run with Uniform and dates with Sheer Mag and Code Orange.
