Amyl and The Sniffers can almost smell a Top 10 LP in the U.K., as their new album, ‘Comfort To Me’, lands at No. 11 on the midweek chart.
The Aussie punk rockers’ second album, Comfort To Me, smashed into the UK charts with a No. 11 position on the midweek chart, just behind the released ABBA Gold.
Wherever it lands when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published late Friday, its entry point will, without a doubt, totally eclipse the band’s career-best, a No. 91 for their 2019 self-titled debut.
That fast start was helped by glowing coverage in Rolling Stone and the NME this week, a title that hyped the Aussie punks as “the most exciting live band on the planet right now.” And we couldn’t agree more!
Led by frontwoman Amy Taylor, the four-piece has risen from the underground into globe-trotting, indie cover-star status in a matter of years.
Formed in Melbourne back in 2016, the band self-released two EPs and a handful of singles before signing with King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizards’ Flightless Records label in Australia and joining the band on a 22-date tour of the U.S.
A recording deal followed with ATO Records for North America, as did endorsements from Gucci, an SXSW showcase, and Geoff Travis’ iconic Rough Trade signed them up for the rest of the world, becoming the first Australian band on the label since The Go-Betweens.
In a recent Punktuation article Amy Taylor said that the songs for the album describes the state of the world, herself and generally the whole shit fight of 2020 because half of the lyrics were written during the Australian bushfires and the other half during lockdown.
“I had all this energy inside of me and nowhere to put it because I couldn’t perform. It had a hectic effect on my brain. My brain evolved and warped, and my way of thinking about the world completely changed,” she said.
“Having to deal with a lot of authority during 2020 and realising my lack of power made me feel both more self-destructive and more self-disciplined, more nihilistic and more depressed and more resentful, which ultimately fuelled me with a kind of relentless motivation.
“I became a temporary monster. I partied more, but I also exercised heaps, read books and ate veggies. I was like an egg going into boiling water when this started, gooey and weak but with a hard surface. I came out even harder. I’m still soft on the inside, but in a different way.”
‘Comfort To Me’ was released on Friday 10th September and is available on all streaming services.
