Known for foul-mouthed lyrics that would shame a sailor, the Brisbane four-piece come out guns blazing with a new album that’s full of the C-word – and we don’t mean ‘Covid’.
Flangipanis, a bunch of rebels led by Jodie Lawlor on guitar and lead vocals, with Josh Murphy on guitar, Josh Jansen on drums and Paulie Duncan on bass, have been engaging audiences with their brand of punk since their inception in 2008.
Their latest offering is 15 tracks of well-produced punk anthems that bleed raw energy. There is a good mix of sounds that keep this composition interesting until the last note is played. It mostly leans on high energy, but there is an aura of sadness in the vocals at times.
This is a mature development for the band and is at odds with their usual juvenile delinquencies. Don’t get me wrong, though, Flangipanis will never grow up entirely, and they know how to stir things up with crass tunes like the 23 second long ‘Present’ with the repeated line, “I hope you like your present c*nt!”
Other notable lyrics include “I used to dye my pubic hair” on ‘Asshole Aunt‘ an overly-honest self-narrative, and “Give me your money or suck my clit!” on ‘Faking It‘, which touches on “the growing inaccessibility of healthcare”.
‘Train Ciggie‘ contains samples from the city’s Queensland Rail service, and the song belts out of the gate before breaking down for the ending. ‘Clothes‘ is dedicated to “creeps who like women in bands but only go to the gigs to perve,” and ‘Moving Out‘ is noteworthy as the lyrics are borrowed from website Freepunklyrics, a blog that started as a joke between two friends writing the most cliché punk lyrics they could.
If that’s not enough, on the track ‘Skate‘ bassist Paul steps up on lead vocals as the band enters into ska territory.
Every track tells a story, whether it be depression, escaping a volatile relationship, or distrust in the government. Listeners of this album won’t be able to stop themselves from singing along with Jodie’s angsty expletive-filled vocals, air-strumming with the distorted guitars and nodding to the fast-paced drums.
The record is also aided with some brass instrument interludes courtesy of members of Brisbane stalwarts Blowhard and some fine backing vocals by Grace Drummond of Something Something Explosion.
