Outgoing German Chancellor, Angela Merkel chooses Nina Hagen song for her retirement ceremony

Despite being despised by many German punks Chancellor Merkel picks a song by the Godmother of Punk for her official leaving do!

Angela Merkel has picked the music she wants to be played at her retirement ceremony next week. According to Der Spiegel, the outgoing chancellor has chosen ‘Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen’ (You Forgot The Color Film) by Nina Hagen, which reached the top of the East German charts in 1974. Hagen would later become known as the Godmother of Punk.

The song will be played by the military band of the Bundeswehr, the German armed forces, at the Großer Zapfenstreich (Great Tattoo), a ceremony held to bid farewell to German chancellors, presidents and certain ministers.

Angela Merkel met Nina Hagen 30 years ago on a TV chat show about drug therapies where Hagen storms off the set screaming “This is just a shit with a whole pile of crap here! I’m leaving so you can continue to talk shit!”

Merkel has always kept her opinions on punk rock firmly to herself, although in 2013 she did apologise to Campino the singer of Die Toten Hosen after senior party colleagues butchered their song ‘Tage Wie Diese‘ (Days Like These) during a televised election victory party.

As of going to press the Godmother of Punk has remained silent on whether she sees Merkel choosing her song for her retirement ceremony as an honour or not!
