Northern Ireland Pop Punks CHERYM Drops New Single and Announces Debut Album Release and 2024 Tour Dates!
Hotly-tipped Derry-based Northern Irish trio Cherym continue their unrelenting assault on the upper echelons of pop punk with new single ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’, released this morning.
The track is the latest to be taken from their long-awaited debut album Take It Or Leave It, set for release on 16th February 2024 via Alcopop! Records.
Commenting on the single, drummer Alannagh Doherty says: “This song definitely has a bittersweet taste to it. You know when you want to help someone so bad but they won’t even help themselves? This one is for those of us who realised we just can’t continue to let ourselves get dragged into other peoples problems—as much as we want to help them, we just can’t.”
“This song represents that moment when you know you just have to walk away from someone because the longer you hold on, the more you get hurt, sometimes you just have to take care of yourself first. This song’s also a special one because it wasn’t even supposed to be on the album; it was written and recorded in 24 hours as a last minute addition to the record and it sounds like it came straight outta 2006 Kerrang! Magazine’s greatest hits.”
Fresh from a hugely successful run of October headline tour dates, the band are also delighted to announce a clutch of further UK and Netherlands headline dates for Feb/Mar 2024, ahead of their support slot with Enter Shikari on their 2024 Irish tour dates next year (see below for listings).
Recorded by George Perks at Vada Studios back in January 2023, commenting on their forthcoming debut album the band said: “This album is a project that we’ve been developing for the last 6 years of our lives. Whenever we started the band the end goal was to create music that we enjoyed, and if that meant other people could relate to it and enjoy it too, then all the better.”
“As three queer people who didn’t really fit the criteria when it came to the DIY music scene at that time, we have watched as the scene has evolved and grown into something much more inclusive and beautiful that we can now confidently say we feel like we’re part of. This album tells the story of how our lives have been transformed in the last 6 years—two EPs, lots of shows all over the world, and a few pronoun changes later…we made the record we needed to hear when we were growing up. Take It Or Leave It.”
Roaring pop punk ADHD anthem lead single ‘Do It Another Day’ was released earlier this autumn, picking up a BBC R1 Future Artists play from Jack Saunders and landing on Spotify’s The Punk List. The track followed on from previously-released single ‘Taking Up Sports’ which dropped earlier this year to coincide with the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The official music video saw the band take on the Derry FC football team at The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium, with a guest appearance from Tramp vocalist Sianna Lafferty as love interest.
For those yet to join the bandwagon, Cherym are a three-piece from Derry in Northern Ireland with some seriously infectious songwriting credentials. Taking influence from The Smashing Pumpkins, Bikini Kill, American Football, PUP and Pixies, the trio formed after meeting in college over a joint love of garage rock, pop punk and a desire to be the biggest band in the world.
Starting out as a kick-back against the local music scene boys club back in 2018, the trio finally found mainland success in 2021 when they signed to Alcopop! Records for the release of their critically-acclaimed Hey Tori EP, showcasing their zingy, fearless new recipe for pop punk rock that centres the lived experiences of Gen Z queer women and non-binary people.
The EP’s success led to sizable tours alongside The Beths, cheerbleederz, Arxx and more, with the band jetting out to the US for the first time at SXSW 2023 in Austin earlier this year, and the trio also tipped for big things in Kerrang! Magazine’s Sound of 2023 feature, landing them a bumper summer of festival appearances at TRUCK, Rebellion, High Tide, Badlands and Omagh Pride.
