Bec, Jenn and Nic are back, stronger than ever, with their second punktastic album
Building upon their extensive writing and touring experience, Bristol-based trio IDestroy return with a second selection of catchy feminist punk anthems in this self-titled album.
Their 2021 debut album ‘We Are Girls‘ established Bec Jevons (guitar and lead vocals), Nic Wilton-Baker (bass and backing vocals) and Jenn Hills (drums) firmly in the public consciousness as a force to be reckoned with. Writing about their own experiences as young women in the 21st century, they have plenty to say, and they say it clearly and proudly.
Anyone who has seen IDestroy play live knows what great musicians and performers they are. Clocking up thousands of hours on the road at gigs across the UK and Europe, winning over new fans whrever they go, everyone loves their boundless enthusiasm on stage. It’s encouraging to see this translated into their second album.
Kicking off the album with ‘100 Sounds‘, a great song about the internal chatter constantly polluting our heads, the rhythms from bass and drums beat a dynamic pulse throughout.
Guitar-driven ‘All My Friends Are Plastic‘ is another banger! We can’t always get through to our real-life friends, but you can tell a mannequin anything.. check out the hilarious video below.
All about the joys of modern dating, ‘Capital Letter LOVE‘ is a refreshing ode to those racing and scary feelings of excitement in a new relationship. “Doing my makeup on the train” as you’re rushing to meet up.. A funky number!
‘Headphones‘ was written about the ongoing issue of women not feeling safe to walk on their own. “When we were writing the song, it was always in the news about the horrendous things that happen, and the government’s advice to women was to literally flag down a bus if they felt unsafe!” explain the band. “It’s not solving the problem, that just shows how clueless they are about what it feels like to be a woman in this situation.”
We’ve all been stuck next to somebody who creeps us out, and ‘I Don’t Want To Talk To You‘ is the song that we’d all like to sing when it happens! A riotous roar encouraging us to stay true to our boundaries, this is a great tune to hear live.
Bad relationships are the subject of ‘Sucked The Life Outta Me‘, a darker song detailing the escape from a gaslighter and user. Superb guitar work on this one from Bec!
The climate crisis and planetary pollution are covered in ‘Emergency (End Of The Future)‘. Wondering if they’ll ever grow old, the band question whether this urgent subject is being taken seriously?
My favourite track has to be ‘Cable Cars On Everest‘. Musically it totally hits the spot, lyrically it highlights how the rich are exploting our planet for their own short-term gains. As for the rest of us, well, they DGAF..
The trippy ‘London To Neptune‘ showcases the band’s musical versatility – enjoy the ride!
‘Tell Your Friends That You Love Them‘ is good advice – we never know what’s around the corner. “You’ve got your whole life ahead of you until you don’t no more”. Profound stuff to end the album, with beautiful vocal harmonies and shimmering guitars.
‘IDestroy‘ is a strong second album from a band who really are going places – make sure you catch them live, and get your signed copy of the album HERE (I’ve got my eye on an angry cat patch as well..!)
