Energetic Northumberland Rocker Peesh shares the inner workings of his mind over 12 months in this imaginative album!
Songwriter Peesh never stops – he has music constantly running through his brain – and his latest solo collection is the culmination of 12 months of work. Yes, Peesh wrote a new song for every month of 2024, and has now gathered them together in a limited edition CD release – ‘The Perennial Effect‘ – for your listening pleasure!
Guitarist, singer, and member of several bands – LoGOz, Cherry & Peesh and Monkeys Blood – Peesh really brings his rich musical imagination to life in this brilliant album. Each song was originally released with a B side, and an accompanying video just as imaginative as the music itself.
First track ‘Paralyse‘ is “About that strange sensation when trying to get to sleep between consciousness and drifting away. When your mind is racing with all sorts of random thoughts past and present and you kinda get trapped in there? Like some sort of sleep paralysis. Weird. Or maybe it’s just me?” says Peesh. It’s a transcendent grungy rock song featuring Peesh’s superb electric guitar throughout.
Second entry ‘Blood & Roses‘ was written about the Kennedy assassination in 1963. Peesh’s inspiration; “I’ve seen loads of documentaries and films over the years and it still divides opinion now. I’d love to know what everyone thinks?” Well, we think that Peesh has captured the urgency of the news at the time with another banger of a song!
Third song ‘See No. Hear No. Speak No.‘ tackles mental health – it’s incredibly dificult to get your mind into a good place sometimes, and Peesh perfectly melodizes the anguished fight that it can be. It’s also about how society discourages people from speaking up about their mental health, with far too many suffering or even dying in silence as a result. Vitally important that this is said, and said often until it’s as acceptable to speak about depression as it is a bout of ‘flu.
Upbeat despite its subject matter, ‘End of an Era‘ covers 20th century history to the present day. “This track is seeped in nostalgia looking back on how all things come to an end. Good and bad.” explains Peesh. One of his signature catchy, sing-along numbers with a great video!
‘I.F.O‘ is all about Peesh’s fascination with UFO’s and the unknown.. Going all X-Files, this edgy track combines his enthrallment and sense of mystery with a deep desire to know if the truth is out there..
Sixth song ‘Four Minute Warning‘ clocks in at exactly 4 minutes long. “No intention just a cool coincidence!” laughs Peesh. “It’s about the Good Vs Evil / Devil & Angel type of emotions we often wrestle with in our minds. The fear and hope. The panic and the calm.” An epic track with more than a hint of Green Day about it!
Classic punk song ‘Suicide Holiday‘ is another of those dichotomous offerings Peesh writes so well – ‘getting away from it all’ doesn’t actually allow you to escape the problems in your own head.. The video contains plenty of tongue in cheek good old fashioned British holiday shenanigans!
Unafraid to get political, ‘Your Country Needs You‘ decries the way politicians have abused the workers of this country. Peesh says “This was written a couple of years ago but the current video images fit perfectly in these strange, uncertain times we live in.” Intelligently constructed lyrics and rockin’ guitar reflect the rage so many of us feel at the state our country has been left in.
‘The Idiot’s Lantern‘ takes a poke at all you telly addicts! “I got the title from one of my fave comedians, Stewart Lee, who does a great routine on television and said his Grandad used to call it the Idiot’s Lantern!” says Peesh. “This is a bit of fun in these dark uncertain times we live in! So here’s one for all you goggleboxers! Enjoy!” Peesh shows his own talents for comic acting in the video, while the song’s 70s style rock matches the vibe admirably.
October’s release ‘Harrowing‘ was carefully timed. “This one veers towards the dark side of life, so fits in well with Halloween season” Peesh explains. A track to make us think – what will you regeret when your time comes to shuffle off this mortal coil? A haunting, hook, filled song with Peesh using his acoustic guitar to emphasise the message.
Contemplating death once more in ‘Long Gone‘, Peesh can see that we’re but a flicker of flame in a long tunnel of temporal darkness – but some flames burn brighter, and there is always hope for the future. This song will work well acoustically too, should it make its way into his live solo set.
Final track ‘The Darkness of the Afterglow‘ takes us on a cosmic trip through the ‘rules of life’. There’s always something slightly dark hovering beneath our sense of happiness, so enjoy your freedom while you can.. A dexterous summation of the album and of 2024!
