Avril Lavigne Wants To Adapt ‘Sk8er Boi’ into a Movie

The Pop Punk Princess hopes to turn her 2002 hit into a feature film and “take it to tjhe next level.”

While there’s been no confirmation that her idea has been green-lit by any production companies, the singer-songwriter revealed in a new interview that she intends to explore turning her biggest hit into a movie.

“With it being almost the 20th anniversary [of the song’s release]a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows,” Lavigne said on a recent episode of iHeartRadio‘s She Is The Voice podcast. “It keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me — so I’m actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level.”

As for the song’s inspiration, Avril said she had drawn on what she was going through at the time: “High school. “You know what it was like,” she continued, “you have all the different groups and cliques; there’s skaters, preps and jocks. [the songis] kind of like a missed opportunity at love.”

Lavigne added:

“The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s too cool for him. But then, five years from now, she’s feeding the baby and she’s all alone, and she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society’s expectations.”

The track has been previously primed for a film adaptation, too. Back in 2003, Paramount Pictures hired writer David Sabel (ER) to pen a movie based on the themes of “Sk8er Boi”
