South London punks, Play Dead, release their Debut EP Skint on the 26th of March this year through Blitzcat Records. If the lead single on this EP, Shaun, is anything to go by, it will smash onto the scene like a hurled pint glass!
The band gives a succinct overview of the song:
“It’s a story about Ollie’s (Bass Player) nan’s boyfriend, a gentle giant with a short fuse who got arrested for punching a man off his bike in Brixton. He enjoys pies, pints and Coldplay.”
And it’s fucking hilarious! It takes you back to the way you saw adults when you were a teenager. At only 16 their musicianship is beyond their years, but it’s their view on the world that makes them so captivating.
Their single Six Hours Later is about overdosing on ADHD pills and accepting the sweet release of death, only to wake the next morning, totally fine, with a goodbye video you’d recorded for your friends on your phone, and subsequently having to face the music at school… Not exactly something anyone over 35 had to deal with growing up.
Play Dead are one of those bands that will voice a generation. Because let’s face it, if you’re a teen right now in Briton, you’ve got the wet end of the shit stick – and these guys are gunna tell you all about it.
With endorsement from Steve Lamacq (BBC 6Music), Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1) and Abbie McCarthy (BBC Introducing in Kent), Play Dead are a band to watch closely as they rise from the puddle of Herne Hill, London.
