Die Toten Hosen und der Mersey Beat

Campino’s first book, Hope Street: How I Became an English Master, will be published on October 5th and suddenly there is a new Die Toten Hosen album in the starting blocks.

‘Learning English Lesson 3: MERSEY BEAT! The Sound of Liverpool’ will be released on November 13th – the third part of their legendary series of English language cover albums.

While the first two parts dealt extensively with the beginnings of punk rock, it now goes a long way back, right into the first half of the 1960s. To be more precise, to the Liverpool of the Mersey Sound era.

While researching his book, Campino dealt intensively with the history of the city of Liverpool and the local music scene. It was his love of the Mersey Beat sound that became a factor for him and the Hosen to record 15 ‘Mersey Sound’ cover versions. Die Toten Hosen have carefully transferred the raw energy of this era into the present, but in the end, it still sounds unmistakably like the Hosen.

The result is a fast album with hits and rarities from The Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, The Swinging Blue Jeans and many other legends of this scene.

This new album fits seamlessly into the overall work of the Düsseldorfers and is Campino’s declaration of love for a city and a sound that, for a brief historical moment, was the most important music in the world.

‘Learning English Lesson 3: MERSEY BEAT! The Sound of Liverpool’ will be released on November 13th, 2020 as a one-off, limited and numbered edition of 7,500 LPs and 20,000 CDs!
